About Painters Dunedin

Painters Dunedin is built around a straightforward belief: good painting starts long before the final coat. We value careful preparation, clear communication and work that respects the homes and businesses of Dunedin and the wider Otago community.

Our Story

Painters Dunedin began with founder Hamish McKenzie, who grew up in Dunedin and learned early that the city's houses have plenty of character and more than a few painting challenges. His first years in the trade involved weatherboard houses, old timber windows and interior renovations where the preparation could take as much care as the painting itself. Those experiences shaped the way he approached the work. Rather than rushing to put colour on a wall, Hamish wanted to understand why the old paint had failed and what would help the next finish perform properly.

As he worked on properties across Dunedin, from hill suburbs such as Roslyn and Mornington to the coastal neighbourhoods and out towards the Taieri Plain, he saw how different conditions affected buildings. A sheltered interior wall, an exposed weatherboard elevation and a harbour-side roof were not jobs that could be treated in exactly the same way. He established Painters Dunedin to give local property owners a painting service based on practical advice, sensible preparation and personal responsibility for the work.

Hamish later brought together a small team with complementary skills. Sarah Wilson focuses on interior painting and finishing details, while Liam Fraser brings a careful approach to exterior preparation and site organisation. Their shared view is that a good result comes from doing the ordinary things well: protecting the property, preparing the surface, explaining the work and taking pride in the finish. The business remains focused on Dunedin and the surrounding Otago service area, with a commitment to treating each project as an individual property rather than just another coat of paint.

How We Work

Do the Preparation Properly

We believe cleaning, sanding, filling, priming and checking the substrate are essential parts of painting. Skipping preparation can undermine even a carefully applied topcoat.

Speak Plainly

We explain what we can see, what we recommend and what may need further assessment. Our customers should understand the work they are considering.

Respect People's Property

A house is someone's home and a workplace supports someone's livelihood. We take care with access, protection, work areas and clean-up.

Take Pride in the Small Details

We care about coverage, neat edges, careful finishing and a practical final review. Good workmanship is often most visible in the details.
